Defending Grassroots Accountability Against Party Gatekeeping

The Gatekeeping Problem

Look, I didn’t want this fight. I really didn’t. But when the chair of the Idaho Republican Party goes out of her way to tell Republicans to block our scorecard, to ignore it completely, to not even look at it... we’ve got a problem.

She didn’t mention us by name, but everyone knew who she was talking about. And here’s what gets me. She’s welcome to her opinion. I’d never try to silence hers. So why is she working so hard to silence ours? Why is she trying to be the gatekeeper of what information Republicans can see? Why can’t she let Republicans think for themselves?

When we set out to create our scorecard, our main objective was to protect the Idaho GOP Platform. Having the party chair go against it without asking us anything about it is a slap in the face.

Her main gripe seems to be that we use AI to help analyze bills. (Keep in mind that most legislators are now using it as well.) She says the “brain” is better for that. Okay, fine. But then she tells people not to use their own brains to check if our ratings make sense. She’s gatekeeping the information you’re allowed to consider while claiming to champion human judgment. You can’t have it both ways.

Here’s what I think is really going on. Party insiders don’t want our scorecard to hold Republicans accountable to the platform. They want to control the narrative. They want to decide who gets held accountable and who doesn’t. That’s gatekeeping, pure and simple. How The Scorecard Actually Works

Since there’s apparently some confusion, let me walk you through exactly what we do.

First, we start with the Idaho Republican Party Platform. Not something that we created… the actual platform that delegates voted on and approved. Every article, exactly as written.

When a bill comes up in the legislature, our AI analyzes it against each article. Yes, we use AI in that process. Every rating includes an explanation of why we scored it the way we did. Everything is transparent and posted publicly.

We also track votes. When a legislator votes, BillTrack50 records whether they voted for or against bills that align with the platform, and the results are displayed on our scorecard. Over time, this gives you a picture of whether someone is actually governing as a Republican or just campaigning as one.

The AI helps us do in hours what would take a person weeks during the session. That’s it. It’s a tool that helps us rate hundreds of bills so regular grassroots Republicans don’t have to spend all day at the Capitol trying to keep up.

But every rating we show our work. Every score we explain it. You can look at any bill we’ve rated, read our reasoning, compare it to the platform yourself, and decide if our 3 AI large language models got it right.

That’s the opposite of gatekeeping. That’s transparency.

The Platform Matters

The Idaho Republican Party Platform isn’t just some document somebody made up. It’s the result of years of work by Idaho Republicans. These are regular people who show up to precinct meetings, county conventions, and the state convention. People who debate, discuss, vote, and build consensus on what it means to be a Republican in Idaho.

It’s the measuring stick for how Republican legislators should govern. Our scorecard just shows whether they’re actually doing what they said they’d do. It’s meant to protect the platform.

We’re committed to that platform. Not because every word is perfect or because we’d necessarily write it the same way. But because it represents what Idaho Republicans decided through the proper, specific process. If something in the platform needs to change, there’s a way to do that. But until it changes, people running as Republicans should be held to it.

Think for Yourself

The party chair can criticize how we do things all day long. She can say AI isn’t as good as human judgment. But then she turns right around and tells you not to use your own judgment to see if our ratings make sense.

That’s not leading people. That’s gatekeeping their access to information.

We’re asking you to do one thing. Think for yourself.

Don’t let anyone tell you not to even look. Not us, not the party chair, nobody. (In fact here we also publish a whole slew of scorecards that we do not agree with so you can see those too.) Don’t believe someone who says accountability is bad for the party. Don’t fall for the line that transparency is somehow a threat.

The only people scared of transparency are the ones who’ve got something to hide.

Idaho Republicans deserve transparency. They deserve accountability. And they deserve the freedom to think for themselves without party gatekeepers deciding what information they’re allowed to see.

Like I said at the start, I didn’t want this fight. But when party leadership tells grassroots Republicans to ignore accountability and quit thinking for themselves, somebody’s got to say something.
